No idea about stipends, but certainly enough to live comfortably (not buy a Ferrari though!). 40-50k per year??

Not sure about the ABR eligibility.....USMLE will be a must...I think Canadian fellowships are recognized by the ACGME, so you should be okay but no harm in writing to the ABR directly.

If you do get an answer, please do post it here.

Thanks....wr

Congratulations on getting the visa and completing your CS...hopefully you will be done with this stuff soon.

If I am not mistaken, Mark Schweitzer is the department director at UOttawa and a really well known and excellent MSK radiologist. If that is the case, it would be a great learning experience.

The practice patterns in the US and Canada are a little different and you may see a slightly lower volume in Canada, but this would be more institution dependent. You could certainly ask them that when you go to interview.....Dr. Schweitzer has worked in both environments and would be able to give you a better idea of this.

If you are faculty, I think you could expect a salary in that range...probably at the lower end and maybe even lower 80-90k depending on the institution.

Best thing to get information is go through individual department websites and see what they have on them. If not, e-mail the program director's secretary and finally, but probably most effective is to call the program director's secretary.

Good luck

1) I don't believe you have to do 5 years of training before applying for fellowships but you should have a radiology degree/diploma from overseas. Many people I know successfully applying like this.
2) No idea about future plans of the ABR...grab things while they are available...things constantly change.
3) Research etc are helpful but not necessary
4) Yes
5) It varies...if you are a fellow, you will get a fellows salary, if faculty, a faculty one and sometimes they may give you a low faculty salary but it all varied by institution
6) Work hard, write papers if you can, be a good radiologist
7) No idea but I am sure it can't hurt!

Good luck

Hi Aziz,

1) The ABR requirements relate to training in the US. If you have completed a radiology residency overseas, I believe the one year of clinical training will be waived. The one year clinical training refers to an internship year in medicine, surgery or a transitional year (in the US). The four years of radiology training, if youhave not trained in radiology before refer to a residency in the US. If you have, these maybe a residency, fellowship or faculty position at an academic radiology department or any combination of the above. But, they must be at the same place to qualify.
2) I think you should be able to get a fellowship in IVR with those scores. The relevance of scores varies almost daily, depending on supply and demand!
3) It's tough to get you those numbers, but I know plenty of people taking that course successfully.
4) Residency salaries are between $40 and 50k (as of 2-3 years ago) and fellowships at the upper end of that. Faculty salaries can be between $150 & 300k depending on where you are. It is possible that you get a little less if you are on the 4 year path.
5) As of this time, it appears that radiology positions are exactly or slightly overstaffed, but there are openings depending on where you are willing to go (rural versus urban; the former has more openings). Many people feel that with budget cuts, radiology will be hit harder (it already has been) but radiology has survived these before. One will just have to work harder to make the same money. You should check out what sites like SIR have to say about the future of IR in the US vis a vis all the turf wars etc. Sometimes these things are institution dependent.
6) Nucs, IR, Paeds, Neuro, Body usually have openings....MSK is tough to get
7) No idea about the middle east, sorry!

Hope this helps....wr
